Stitching the Path to Freedom: Quilt Codes and the North Star

About this event

Exploring Hidden Messages & Celestial Guides on the Journey to Liberation
Join us for an enlightening workshop that uncovers the secret symbols woven into quilts and the guiding light of the North Star—two essential tools used by freedom seekers in their pursuit of liberation before the Civil War.
Our two distinguished guest speakers will take you on a journey through history, artistry, and astronomy:
?? Maria Mayer – An African American quilter and a member of The Blue Triangle Quilt Guild of Houston, Texas, Maria has created a stunning exhibit of mini quilts featuring the quilt codes believed to have been used by enslaved African Americans. Through storytelling, folklore, and tradition, she reveals the mysteries and symbolic meanings behind these intricate designs—patterns that may have served as silent roadmaps to freedom.
? James Wooten – Planetarium Astronomer at the Houston Museum of Natural Science and a member of H-Town AAHGS, James brings his expertise in celestial navigation to uncover the role of the North Star in guiding freedom seekers through the Underground Railroad. From explaining the mysteries of the night sky to inspiring generations through the Burke Baker Planetarium and HISD outreach programs, James offers a fascinating perspective on how astronomy played a pivotal role in shaping the journey toward emancipation.
Come and immerse yourself in this rich intersection of art, science, and resistance. Learn how stories passed down through generations continue to hold deep historical significance today.
